Chapter 1-3
So one thing I noted as I was beginning this novel is that it started in the MMC’s point of view, which I found unique. I mean would the story have changed if the story began with the FMC’s point of view. Meh I am not sure, but it was unique either way. I’m curious if it started this way so as not to harp on traditional Black female stereotypes…
We are introduced to Aron, a business man, and gamer, who seems to take pride in his business and is openly upset about a social media storm arising surrounding one of his games Legendsfall. Of course he is wanting to get a handle on the issue as he has other works coming out and is assured it would be taken care of, but Aron stands by business and is not going to just let someone else handle what he sees personally to be his problem. Enter, Sam Reynolds, AKA ReyOfSun, a social media influencer, and gamer, who represents minority gamers, but more specifically Black Women gamers. ( I don’t know, but when I saw this book at my local BAM I just knew it fit so well with everyone wanting to be an influencer, but took more of a perspective of something that has more impact…advocating).
The issue. Ah yes well the game Legendsfall has a hidden easter egg, where you encounter an NPC, a black woman, who gives you a gift that is used later in the game, however when she does she is killed graphically and more horrendously then any other character in the game. Additionally there is not a black female character that is playable.
ReyOfSun, or Sam, is not just posting critiques on the game though, but is calling for change and just advocating for black women gamers in general as far as accessibility, etc. I mean the gist of the book has some very serious notes, which seem hidden within what of course is a romance. Stick with me.
Chapter three is a flash forward in time as we are now at the GamerCon and Sam, dressed anonymously as ReyOfSun, is giving her piece and answering Q&A’s about her social media posts, but is approached by ‘mysterious’ man in a hoodie.
